Touched by tragedy and harboring a paralyzing secret, Mickey O'Neil is the kind of boy who feels things others don't seem to notice. Especially adults. And this embodies him with a unique gift. Empathy. Still, when a traffic detour forces his family's car through a black Bronx neighborhood, Mickey, like his mother and older brother, is afraid. The year is 1969. Whites and blacks still live in different worlds; and when Mickey and his brother run from home they find themselves lost in the world they've never known. Harlem. Alone, frightened, and without a cent, the brothers are at the mercy of the streets. But salvation comes in the form of the first black man they've ever met. A widower and former Negro League ballplayer, Jack Hutchins has demons all his own, born of a lifetime of discrimination. Reluctantly, he agrees to shepherd the troublesome boys across Harlem to his workplace, Yankee Stadium. But along the way their truths and secrets bubble to the surface and bring with them a danger all their own. Touching on themes of innocence, guilt, forgiveness and ultimately love, "In Harlem's Way" tells the inspiring story of the unlikely relationship forged between Mickey and Jack, and the bond that heals and forever changes them both.

In Harlem's Way Robert Pucci 9781482690323 Books Reviews
Pucci's prose is so descriptive and lovely that I was enveloped in the story and characters and could not put this book down. The story takes place in an era that is relevant to me, which made the novel all the more fascinating. Whether you experienced the civil rights movement or not, this book will open your eyes to the harshness of bigotry and the hope of tolerance.
Vivid characterizations, an involving story, plenty of lovely period touches, and colorful dialogue - this is one you'll enjoy, for sure!
Excellent portrait of American life in the 1960's. Provides valuable lessons in human rights and learning experiences. This work how a life experience can change minds and hearts!!!
This charming story is just enough suspense and wit to keep you page turning. Pucci's voice as a young adolescent lost in a haunting traumatic memory magically transported me back to the Bronx of my own youth. A time of growing change on the social horizons and boundaries set by working class neighborhood's that were close knit tied together through Catholic school and parish Churches. It was a time when everyone played in the street until their mother called them in for dinner. I loved this book. I love The Bronx.
Robert Pucci is a talented writer who can weave a fascinating, nostalgic story succinctly & creatively. It may be his first novel, but certainly NOT his first success.
Who doesn't remember this kind of story from their own growing-up years?
Very well written, relevant today as to what is going on in the world related to racism.
I thought it was a very well thought out coming of age books. Great read. Well thought out. Well done!
Robert Pucci has created a world with characters that broke my heart even as they made me laugh and smile. His prose is rich and clear, and his characters will stay with you always. This is a deeply meaningful book, one that captures life's sadness and cruelty and leaves you with a great sense of joy for the overwhelming power of love and hope.
There are things that bind us as human beings that transcend circumstance, socioeconomic status, age and race. Loss being one of them. Love another. Pucci tackles these themes and more in his first novel. The portrayal of Jack Hutchins is so very real, I feel that I know him. Really know him. He is flawed, as we all are, and reluctantly becomes the hero in more ways than one. He shares something with Mickey that goes beyond any boundary. Mickey's deep affection for his brother, Frank, particularly captivated me. The genuineness of Mickey's love for Frank was so powerful and pure, it felt like reading someone's mind instead of a book. I enjoyed their relationship. I delighted in it. This novel was a fast read and would be a great book-club book. Lastly, it reminded me of Hebrews 132 "Be not forgetful to entertain strangers for thereby some have entertained angels unawares."
