Carter takes us back to Great Britain in the times when WWI was like a distant rumble of thunder and then through the early years of the war. We see the war, mostly, through the eyes of an American who comes from working-class society and his British friend who comes from the highly-privileged English (monied) aristocracy. I was fascinated to follow the adventures--and foibles--of the first pilots of the ancient biplanes who learned to wage war from the skies. Their war was far different, as it often is today, from the men on the ground or in the trenches.
The author has an easy style that puts readers in the middle of action whether it is garden parties for the upper elite of British society (including a man named Churchill) or in the barracks that house the earliest combat pilots.
Carter obviously spent many hours researching the history of the times and smoothly brings us in to them. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the sequels.

This ebook is listed on as being The Barrington Quintet Volume I. I am assuming that the author is planning to release each volume to reflect one year of the Great War. This particular volume focuses on the events of 1914 as they relate to Stanley Walker & Jimmy Barrington. Stanley comes from a working class background but has becomes close friends with Jimmy, a member of the elite Barrington family, through school connections.

The story begins at a party at the Barrington Home where we learn that the Barrington family is an extremely large one. I found this section a little overwhelming as I wasn’t clear on who was who and many names were being introduced. I think as part of a series which is to focus on the Barrington’s it would be helpful to have some sort of character list or family tree. It took me a little while to get into the story, but once I did, there were many fascinating parts and it was very clear that the author has researched this time period extensively and knows how to write in such a way that he sets you right there in the time period.

Both Walker and Jimmy Barrington end up trying to train as pilots, mostly through machinations on Jimmy’s part. As it happens, Stanley Walker succeeds brilliantly, while Jimmy doesn’t quite have what it takes and ends up following a different wartime path.

I loved reading the section where Stanley had his first flight. To quote “Walker knew that he was not the same man he had been just half an hour ago. He had experienced a sort of magic, and that magic had changed him.”

I found myself having to use my kindle dictionary several times to find out what the author was referring to. This is not a bad thing in and of itself but some elements such as “Theosophy” didn’t really have an important part in the story and I felt did not add to the flow of events.

The story alternates between the perspective of the two men and occasionally their paths do cross as the year plays out. The ending to me came very abruptly and I would rather have continued on directly to the next part. All in all, this is well researched and well-written and when all five parts are read together will no doubt be a very moving read.
Great story, learned more about WW1
CAN'T WAIT FOR MORE!
An interesting look at life during WWI from the British viewpoint. There is a look at the wealthy, affluent, and politically powerful class versus the middle class. The main character falls in love with a woman from the upper class and the reader follows the struggles that such love brings.
Short Review If you are an historical fiction fan with interests in aviation and WWI, then you will enjoy this book.

Longer Take What sold me on purchasing this book was certainly not the cover. In fact, when opening the file on my Nook to read I regretted the purchase when I saw it in my library. But we press on. The story starts slow and while I did not want to stop reading, for the first quarter of the book I was thinking this would be a two star review, the second star because of the research and knowledge into this time period. Unfortunatly the author seemed to care more about this history than developing the character conflicts. However, if you can get past that point the story opens into a rich environment where the character grow, their internal conflicts develop, and become more engaging to the reader.
It was refreshing to read a story about WWI from an author who obviously did his research. I’m a lover of “buddy stories” (think Kirk and Spock) and this one didn’t disappoint. If you're a fan of Band of Brothers, it reminded me a bit of Nixon and Winters, they way they were inexorably connected throughout the war but always came back together when they needed each other the most. Carter’s Stanley Walker and Jimmy Barrington were as believable as they were charming. It felt like they really existed.

The Deadly Playground also did an excellent job of building up the tension. It started out feeling very Great Gatsby. You knew the world was on the edge of something big. The tension ebbed and flowed throughout, keeping me hooked right up until the end.
The story is captivating from beginning to end, and captures the mood of Britain during the horrific events of 1914. Though ostensibly focused on a single aristocratic family, the Barringtons, it parallels the real events in Europe as the German war machine floods through Belgium and into France. I promise you will have a hard time putting the book down, once you begin.
