Mourn Not Your Dead Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James Novels Deborah Crombie 9780060789572 Books

MOURN NOT YOUR DEAD by Deborah Crombie is Book 4 of her Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James crime series.
A very powerful police administrator, Alastair Gilbert, is found dead in his kitchen in a suburban area of London.
Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James are called in to assist the local police efforts.
It is a small town and full of secrets and overlapping relationships. No one seems eager to talk about the Gilbert Family, and a string of petty thefts that have been taking place in the village.

I liked this title very much. It is very detailed - the plot, the characters, their relationships, their interactions with other police units. The detecting and police procedural part of the series is much more detailed and an integral part of the story. Duncan and Gemma wok with other police officers and detectives and are in and out of London to Holmbury St. Mary often. The sense of place is very real.

I am looking forward to Book 6.

Mourn Not Your Dead Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James Novels Deborah Crombie 9780060789572 Books Reviews

Another great mystery by Deborah Crombie which I liked a great deal. I had started with the book where they had moved in together and had to digress and go back some. The mystery was great and eventually ( as expected) the characters came tougher again.

I now have book #5 to read and am looking forward to the whole series. The mysteries are very nicely and intricately done and the characters definitely have their moments ( good and bad).
At the end of this book Gemma actually says that it feels like she and Kincaid have spent the entire book (well, this case) "coming and going in cars". You will read A LOT about driving, roads, traffic, and so on in the book.

You will also read a lot -- really an amazing amount -- about food, interior decoration, landscapes and cityscapes, and drinking cups of tea. And also watch Kincaid and Gemma winnow their way through dozens of suspects until Kincaid finally detects the real killer and gets him / her to confess, aka explain how he/she did it, why, and tie up all the loose ends. And, because Ms Crombie made the decision to have her series also involve a romance, to see how THAT comes along.

These are the coziest of cozy mysteries. When you have a Villain who drugs the family dog rather than killing it, you are definitely in cozy mystery land.

Don't get me wrong; I am really enjoying listening to this series so far. Rigorously Righteous Detective Superintendant Duncan Kincaid and his partner / lover (?) Detective Sgt Gemma James always have a moment at the end of the book when the real killer has confessed and Gemma pulls Kincaid aside and she says "Guv, she / he has only done what ANYONE would do," and Kincaid lectures her along the lines of "But no, Gemma, we are talking about The Law here and that's a line we must never cross. No, love, we must take him / her in to be charged", etc. Of course, since no confession in these books is ever preceded by a caution (just like being read your Miranda rights in the US, in Britain the subject must be cautioned as to his right to be silent, to have a lawyer present, etc -- in other words, all the cautionary advice specifically designed to prevent the unwary suspect from making the confession which DS Kincaid has figured out the best way to manipulate the suspect into making -- and there is always a moment where Kincaid realizes that yep, our suspect is going to fall for it and "he relaxes"...) all of these cases would be thrown out before there would even BE a charge.

But that's the territory of a police procedural, and that's not what I want. (Although I am curious to see if Ms Crombie ever figures this out.) I love watching the befuddled Kincaid and James eat, not eat (there are always several growling stomachs in each book, which I'm sure I mainly notice because I'm hearing the narrative), hike, agonize over their relationship, and basically notice and describe every damn thing, which is only endurable because Crombie is such a good writer, and of course drive around in cars.

But none of that is a problem, although I'm sure if I were reading I'd be skipping pages, because things can get pretty slow.

The main thing here is whether and how Gemma and Kincaid are going to get together and stay together. And because, hey, I love a good cozy mystery, and so far these are some of the best.
One of my guilty pleasures is reading mysteries. I particularly like those in a series as the main character(s) return for each installment and I enjoy watching their stories develop. Having a focus on characters and location, in addition to the mystery, also keep things interesting. These books by Deborah Crombie are what "cozy" mysteries were before the genre was taken over by the schlocky and formulaic books so often published currently. They offer fun, enjoyable reads without a lot of blood or violence and yet aren't total fluff either.

In this installment, everything you need for a good read is here characters which are likeable but complex, a setting that lends itself to the reader getting comfy (think reading chair with a hot or cold drink easily at hand), and a mystery that keeps you reading to find out "who-dun-it". After four books, I have come to depend on Ms. Crombie to provide a purely entertaining read without blood or gore and one which will encourage me to continue on to the next book once this is finished. She delivered on this one and I have already downloaded Dreaming of the Bones. My only real complaint relates to one of the mysteries not being solved (or acknowledged it wasn't) by the end of the book. Hopefully, that little hanging tidbit will get resolved next time out.
