Edge of Black A Samantha Owens Novel JT Ellison Books

From my blog 4 1/2

I think JT Ellison has officially became my favourite investigative thriller author and to think the first book I read by her I wasn't impressed, so glad I tried again. She gives me everything I want now. The feeling of being on the edge and can't read fast enough to know how it will end. Allowing the reader to be part of the investigation as clues are revealed. Really great characters who you begin to connect with and look forward to seeing more of. There are always connections which highlights how small our world really is, I find this so true and exciting.

The Edge of Black is the 2nd book in the series of Dr. Samantha Owen, a Forensic Pathologist. This book begins with an unknown environment attack in the Metro system and a student falls ill while Samantha is teaching. They rush her to the hospital when all hell breaks loose, is this a terrorist attack. Many are sick and in the hospital but only 3 die, how is this possible? I enjoyed the investigation on finding out if the 3 are connected and how.

We get to know unknown groups in the underworld, tech hackers, groups that many would consider cults and those that live the clean life, away from all. Samantha's new lover, Xander, is one and he has his own way of helping the investigation. Book 1 is about Samantha losing her family, helping to investigate a murder of a friend and meeting Xander.

This book is told from the voices of Samantha, Xander and an old friend Detective Darren Fletcher, they are not officially a team and always banter with who is in charge and who and when should they reveal delicate information for the investigation but also their own safety. I liked that this book felt like it could happen today which is quite scary. I think we would be amazed at how many people are out to damage the government in any way possible and how many are ready to try to continue living when the world is vulnerable and possibly ending.

We first met Samantha in the Taylor series by JT Ellison but I love these one's a little more. I would start with A Deeper Darkness. I highly recommend this to fans of thrillers, crime/police procedural and suspense fans. Also those that used to love Patricia Cornwell, give this series a try. A 5 star series, I need to read book 4, I don't know how I read out of order.

Edge of Black A Samantha Owens Novel JT Ellison Books Reviews

The second book in the Dr. Sam Owens saga is better than the first. Sam is showing signs of recovering from the loss of her husband while settling into her new life in D.C. Xander Whitfield is with her and their chemistry grows as they both struggle to rejoin the world. When Sam is thrust into the middle of a biological attack in the Metro, readers are along for the ride. Is this a terrorist attack or something else? Without a doubt in this day and age, this topic is all too realistic. Once again Detective Fletcher plays a predominant role and readers watch him grapple with his feeling for Sam, his desire to do a good job and his belief that the task force may not be on the right track. Sam thought she had given up her life as an investigator, but this story thrusts her back into the role and into the realization that she likes investigating and will continue to do that in the future, which is good for us who love these stories.
J.T. Ellison has me. I love her Taylor Jackson novels and now her Dr. Samantha Owens series has me, too. Sam currently is living in D.C., is to begin teaching at Georgetown, staying with Xander part-time. Peace and healing feels good. Then a toxin is released into the D.C. Metro and three people die. Sam's involvement starts small and gets bigger. The pace is pell-mell and I am caught completely from Washington to Colorado and back again as leads ping pong among all the players. Medical examiner procedures, homicide logic, JTTF, terrorist(s?) and a congressman fill out the rostrum of characters. A busy, lively and intense read all the way through. And what about Sam and Xander? Sit back for a smart and fine read.
This book hits the ground running and never lags. The story is exciting, timely, plausible, builds slowly but surly and continues to be full of all kinds of twists and turns. As you read you discover so many clues that help you discover who did it and why. Ms. Ellison writes with great rhythm, not to fast and not to slow. The story is believable as are the characters.. I love getting to know about the growing relationship between "Sam" and Xander as well as learning more about Fletch and Amando (aka Lurch). Ms. Ellison excels at developing very imaginitive and very scary plots as well as creating and developing believable and memorable primary as well as secondary characters. This book is a 4.5 for sure. I have already bought and started the third book in this series.

Dr. Samantha ("Sam") is the forensic pathologist! Dedicated, caring and one heck of a strong and resilient woman. More over Kay Scarptta!! "Sam" is much more realistic, believable as a three dimensional character and eminently more likeable!!!
