This book. BLEW. MY. MIND.I have no words. I finished this book days ago, and I cannot stop thinking about it. I don't know if any words I write are going to be able to do this unconventional story justice.
I have been obsessed with this book since I read the blurb. Sometimes you just know when you are going to read a fantastic book and this one was all that and more.
I should probably state for the record that this book is dark and twisty and not an easy read, so it's not going to be for everyone. But if you like that type of book, you will love this one!
All of my expectations for the hero/antihero were met within the first two chapters. Where could this book possibly go from there? Let me tell you it goes places I never expected it to!! When the hero says this to the heroine you just know it's going to be a wild ride:
“’Hell sent us the evilest disease, and we humans called it ‘love,’”
It's no secret I love a strong heroine, and that is what I found here. I can't say any more without giving parts of the story away. Read the book. You will see I am right, especially with thoughts from her like this:
"I followed him, because that’s what I did. I’d follow him to Hell if we weren’t already there."
Two fractured souls coming together in the most unusual way. This story is perfectly written and hauntingly beautiful.
This was my first Anne Malcom book, and I plan on catching up with what I have been missing out on!!

Absolutely Brilliant! It's dark, somewhat twisted(but in a good way), yet absolutely beautiful! It's not your typical kind of hea, but it is the only kind that could be worthy of Elizabeth and Lukyan. Two beyond broken people, that find some resemblence of happiness in each other. Lukyan is sent to kill Elizabeth, but as he watches her he sees into her soul, one that has been shredded by abuse and a terrible loss at the hands of her estranged husband. So broken she is ready for death and welcomes it. This lack of any emotion intrigues Lukyan and finds he can't kill her. Returning at a later date he rips her from the world, the insulated bubble of safety she created. She suffers from agoraphobia, and by taking her the way he did she suffers a mental break. He nurses her back to health and along the way teaches her to fight. Fight for herself, for him, for them. He also feels things for her, things and feelings he never knew he had or could have. She begins to grow, and moves back from the ledge of death she once embraced. She finds herself in love with him and he in love with her. This isn't your typical romance, far from it. Darkness, blood, evil, apathy is all they both know. They both find their pleasure in pain, trading one darkness for another. They accept each other, down to their marrow. He knows everything about her, knows her better than she knows herself. She has seen him at his worst, accepts him for the cold, caculating hitman he is and loves him despite all that.
This is probably one of the most beautiful love stories I have ever read. I had so many emotions reading this. At first I thought "Wow, they're two messed up people", but as you read you realize that Elizabeth and Lukyan are perfect for each other. They could never find love, or their kind of happiness in anyone but each other. They are like the last two pieces of the puzzle. They fit together perfectly, filling in the whole picture.
I found myself reading this book against my better judgement. It's not my usual genre but I one clicked after much debate because Anne Malcolm never disappoints me. When I bought Birds I thought I'm probably going to skim through because of the dark subject matter. I did skim for the first night and then I thought about what I had read and decided to start over and give it a shot. I'm blown away. From the first chapter I was reeled in. The characters of Lucyan and Elizabeth were both very dark but so complex. I found myself rereading parts that were so complex that I had to stop and ponder the rational of their thoughts and actions. The sheer complexity of this book employs every skill I have ever acquired through the study of psychology, sociology, and criminology. I won't lie this book won't be for everybody. If you're comfort zone is the romance that Anne Malcolm usually writes and you're not willing to step out of that, this isn't for you. But, if you're a true fan of this author and are willing to go along for the ride, you won't regret it. I found myself completely on board and understanding the darkness within the pages of "Birds of Paradise". Having said all of this the book leaves a few questions for me, which leads me to hope and pray that Lucyan and Elizabeth continue their journey in a future book. I would truly love to see justice served for Elizabeth. I would also love to see the relationship flourish after Lucyan's brief glimpse of lightness . I loved this book and cannot encourage stepping out of you're comfort zone enough.
Anne Malcom sure can write. Her prose is captivating and hypnotizing. I enjoyed Birds of Paradise. I’m a dark romance lover and this was could easily be put in that category. Birds of Paradise is all about Elizabeth’s evolution from being utterly broken and dead. Her story was horrific and the revelation of the horror she endured was told through flashbacks and Elizabeth’s behavior and mental state. She slowly started to come back to life after being captured by Lukyan. He’s mysterious and dark. I was very intrigued by him and his motives.
I struggled with their connection when it turned sexual. As their relationship evolved it still just felt like a release when they got together. There’s no chemistry which was a shame since I enjoyed their bantering and how Lukyan did everything to strengthen Elizabeth. Emotionally and physically. She embraced her flaws and ugliness. I saw them more as friends. A team. The story primarily takes place in Lukyan’s house and at times it got a bit repetitive. With a strong ending and flawless prose I can honestly say I want to read more from this author.
