This was truly a fantastic book. The H was definitely a cruel man and I really didn't think the author could make him redeemable. The h definitely had to be strong to love a man like this. The epilogue was fantastic as well.
Why 4.5 stars and not 5? I realize this is a fantasy BUT there is no way a man such as him would have let a woman speak to him the way he let her. Maybe that's how the author thought to show us he had goodness in him, but it just wasn't believable. I was always expecting him to roar with pure anger at her boldness, but he didn't really. He admired her for it. Most men like him might admire her for it but they would still go off on her. There was only one thing that got on my nerves! Her tears! BUT any woman in her place would have cried, so maybe I'm just cold.
I like more heat in a book than this one, but I loved the book and really didn't miss it. It has only one tastefully written love scene. If this book wasn't as well written as it was I definitely would not read anymore books by this author because I like more heat in my books, but I DEFINITELY will be reading this series.

You know when you read romance novels with a Hero who possesses a dark past? He's a bastard son, or he failed to prevent and entirely unpreventable murder, or carries guilt for some travesty for which he wasn't even responsible? Something that makes him reluctant to love and bestows upon him a somewhat moody disposition but allows him to remain likeable? The Hero in The Dark Knight is nothing like that. He is truly dark. I won't list his travesties but suffice it to say that by modern standards he would be deemed a psychopath. I know medieval England was a dark period and perhaps his portrayal is not far from the truth of the times but I ended up having to close my memory to some of his acts in order to continue reading the book. That being said I did enjoy it. His love of the Heroine is truly redemptive. He attempts to make amends for his sins and sincerely changes his ways, all for the love of a woman.
I reread this book after some time and remember why I was so frustrated. Kelli, the heroine, had no redeeming qualities. She was demanding and needy. It seemed that every other line was to make a request, for the last time. Several times, in one chapter, she swore she would do anything if he just gave in to one more thing. Two mins later, she was making a promise for something else.
For the brutality of the times, it falls rather flat that a warmonger, with an army of mercenaries, would just stop, and become a "gentleman night" . Utter rubbish.
The title says it all and it is so true!! This is no doubt one of the darkest Medieval Novels I have read. There is a lot of darkness, many bad character's, very few good people, but what the author does is amazing. She pulled me in so fast, that I couldn't believe what I was reading.

Our main character - Jax, can't be called a hero. He kills not only the enemy, but all their families and that includes children. I can't remember ever reading this genre, where this happens as common practice!! So be warned, this is a very dark novel. Now you maybe asking yourself, why did I give it 5 stars? The truth be told, I felt I was experiencing every sorrow, pain, lost that the people he conquered did. It seemed so real, that I couldn't stop reading.

There are so many elements and layers to this story, that I couldn't do it justice in trying to explain it. But, I will explain, that they're are very few lovemaking scenes, so most of the book is about battles, and the outcome, and how people can change because someone comes into their lives and teaches them right from wrong.

There are so light scenes, when Jax and Kelli, that will make you laugh. I found it necessary, to keep the darkness from over taking the whole story. This is a story of betrayal, battles, HEA (yes we do get one plus an epilogue too which I loved), great complex main and secondary character's, love, suspense, a great connection between our main character's.

Keep in mind the time period you are reading about. The story isn't about every aspect of a battle, that would turn most of us off, but the consequences, when you don't care about the end results. It's about learning to see from another person's perspective.

This is my 5th book by this author, and my favorite, with many more to read. If you read her novels, you know everything isn't sugar and spice. There is always some dark element, but her writing intrigues me because I know she is taking us to a place that is like life, where bad things happen at times to good people. (ljb)
I read this in another review "I will not be rushing off to buy more books by this author."
I Replied
If you don't you will be missing out on a lot of awesome books. It is true that The Dark Lord and Devil's Dominion have much darker "male leads" than any others I have read. Notwithstanding, I absolutely love Kathryn's medieval stories. I would say over 90% of them(I haven't read them all so am guessing low) have absolutely wonderfully heroic Knights. The kind we all admire. While these 2 books are harder to read, due to the brutality, they do depict the times very honestly.. IMO.. Please do try her other books.

My review I have read many of Kathryn's books, I have many more to read. I have loved them all, some a little more than others. Both "The Dark Lord and Devil's Dominion" were very hard to read due to the graphic violence and brutality they portray. Violence and brutality that was rampant during this time. Ajax was raised by a father who taught him that emotion was weakness and that all that was important was amassing wealth and power. Bretten was traumatized by both the siege the experienced and the abuse he was subjected to as a child. While I prefer my Knightly Hero's to be much less demons, these two men/stories were very well handled, imo.
