Mine to Take Futuristic Romance Dara Joy 9780843944464 Books Reviews

This is the third book in the futuristic Matrix series (the follow-up to Knight of a Trillion Stars and Rejar) and I absolutely loved it. I can't wait for Traed's story.
The book's hero, Gian, escapes from captivity with the heroine's help. He takes the heroine, Jenise, with him to his home planet and the adventure they encounter en route was well written. The different cultures, peoples, and planets they encounter while journeying from A to Z were well developed and described by Dara Joy.
The only "disappointment" I had with this book is that I felt like the hero and heroine weren't well suited. The heroine sort of faded into the woodwork against the character of Gian. Joy should have written a spunkier leading lady (like the heroine in Knight of a Trillion Stars) for Gian. Other than that, this was a great read.
This book was not my usual genre. For a person who loves Regency and Historical Romance, it was far outside my normal experience. There was much to like about this story. Gian was wonderfully sexy and Jenise was spirited enough to complement him. I liked the way the alien worlds were described and the way I was able to pick up the customs from the conversations and character's adventures.

I felt the storyline had too many leads into other novels that have either been published or are future releases, even at the author's insistence the books are designed to stand alone. Too many unfinished thoughts and tales from Jenise's fear of power to the injured familiar left behind, to Karpon and the debilitating drug. I wouldn't mind Gian purring in my ear for a long long time, but "The Incarnation" was a bit over the top. I'm afraid if I was Jenise, we would both be fated to grow old - a body can only take so much!

Even with the things about the book that bothered me, I can recommend it for those who like an amusing fantasy and I may even indulge in another purely for the fun of it.
Interesting premise and hot hero can only take this book so far. I loved Gian Ren who was beyond incredible in every way. The heroine Jenise was lacking a bit in comparison. I thought that the "worlds" in which the story took place were an interesting aspect whose descriptions were well done. However, there was something missing with the emotional involvement I felt. I certainly felt the sensuous elements and the sex scenes were beyond sizzling, but other than that I didn't feel a strong connection to what transpired.
I read all the reviews before ordering this book, and I'm very grateful for the encouragement to find it. This is a wonderful story and goes into my keeper pile.

First, I loved the creative love-making of the 'Familiars.' There's an anthology out there called 'Alien Sex' that contains short stories of alien, non-human, love-making adventures, and this story would have fit right in. I've long wondered about an imaginative way to present other humanoid love, and here it is! At first, you might be temptted to say - 'yeah right', but Dara Joy finds a way to make it convincing.

Secondly, the adventure of the story was entertaining. The worlds that they visited, and the sights, peoples they encountered as they escaped the Ganakari people, were fun.

I do think that the book represents a missed opportunity to really explore alien cultures. The setting were brushed over lightly. There were a few Star Wars moments - as if the author had watched a couple Star Wars movies and drawn setting details from the movie. So in that sense, the science fictional aspects of the story were luke warm. I very much think more could have been done with the female lead, the fact that she was actually the queen of the planet from which she was escaping got left out after about the first third of the book. I expected Gian to use the fact that he was with the queen of the Ganakari during his confrontation with their leader, to bring peace to their peoples. There were also tantalizing hints about Jenise's late blooming magnetic abilities. Anything special about her got dropped from the story. I thought her 'dance' - the one time only dance of the Frensi People, was a bit lame. More could have been made of the Frensi's culture & Jenise's birthright.

But at bottom, this book is a tender sexual awakening story. About someone who is searching for her independence, and has her journey co-opted by her male companion - in a predatorial sense. But since he's a 'cat,' you have the sense that she should have been watching for that. In fact, he warns her several times in chapter 2, when she meets, him, that she is in over her head where he is concerned, but she insists on her pre-arranged course of action. Actions have consequences - that's one of the axioms of fiction. And the guy has his own journey to figure out how to make the woman eventually fully embrace him, and her own sensuality. But, dear reader, when you look at the cover art for this one, don't be fooled into thinking the guy is not in control, as Jenise did.

Interesting to compare Gian, the Familiar, with Leopard-man, Ravyn, from Dark Side of the Moon, by Sherrilyn Kenyon - although I have to admit I also liked Vane, the big wolf, from Night Play. Mine To Take also compares well with Silver Angel by Johanna Lindsey, thematically, in terms of a sexual awakening story. In that regard, it also can be compared with Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon.
