A good start for a new police procedural mystery and new writer. The heroine is an experienced police detective, shot three times in the line of duty (a new author-overdoing the heroism part); she has a husband, who would like to see more of her, no children, and a female partner who has become a friend. Their case begins with the murder of a man with connections, whose death their Captain (boss) wants, very much, to be solved quickly.Frankly, the author did too good a job showing just how determined the heroine was to do her job, her total commitment. She does not come through, to me, as a character I would much like to meet; on the other hand, the author also does a good job portraying the frustration of the husband at the heroines overtime, late night duty, and (legitimate) concern that she is too inclined to be shot to be trusted to watch out for herself.
There is a bit too much shifting of suspects, with not much warrant for doing so, but when all is said and done, the book does provide sufficient of interest to warrant the 99 cent price (right now) and the time spent reading it.

A Grand Murder is a caffeine enhanced race through the upper crust of St. Paul to find a killer. The story begins with the murder of a prominent business man on his own front lawn. At the bequest of their chief- a personal friend of the victim, Detectives Catherine O'Brien and Louise Montgomery are on the case. Armed with coffee and Louise's distinct driving skills, they are on a mad dash to solve the case before the Chief comes unglued.
The story is fast paced, which I love and I never felt lost, which I love even more. Ms. Verdick Case has a fabulous ability to draw the scene and the characters at play in it. She made me laugh, cringe, get heart-ache, and want to shake someone- in all the right ways. I always had a clear picture of her characters and their reactions; Catherine's cringing as Louise barreled her Prius through downtown St. Paul, for example. I fell in love with the characters and their personal lives as well. I was cheering all through the book for Catherine and her husband, hoping the job didn't get in the way of their marriage. Mel, the security guard, was one of my favorite supporting roles. She has such a great sense of person and personality I found myself wishing she would pop up more often. Ms. Verdick Case also has a fabulous cast of suspects. She gives us reason to doubt or exonerate each one. The plot twists were well crafted and the red herrings dangled in all the right moments.
Overall I felt I knew too soon who the murderer was, basically because she was a little too helpful, which the detectives figure out toward the end. I will give Catherine this one though- they were under the gun, so to speak, to figure out the case. In future books I hope that she doesn't fall so obviously for the helpful murderer trick. The plot was very familiar, which I don't think is a bad thing necessarily, especially if you are looking to pick up a traditionally written women's sleuthing mystery. I am a fan of getting what I expect. (As a side note, I also love Alpaca wool, and want a pair of the mittens!) I look forward to reading more Catherine O'Brien mysteries; I feel the characters and the author both have a bright future ahead.
A Grand Murder by Stacy Verdick Case transported me away from the stress of my life and into the world of Catherine O'Brien, a Saint Paul homicide detective. Catherine and her partner Louise came alive on the page as I immersed myself in the story to solve the twists and turns of the case along with them. I can't wait for the next book.
Not well written. It is a boring read.
I was surprised at the other reviews, I read a lot of "murder, police procedural, thrillers" and this one is average at best. It is obvious this is a first book - character development is thin, and the prose stilted and at times too "Dragnet". There are some funny lines, but this author has a ways to go to be on my must read list. For the price it is worth a look, but wouldn't pay much more for this author's work unless she develops her craft.
I enjoyed this book, it was a great weekend getaway read and it captured some good Minnesota humor! Looking forward to the next book to see where she goes.... Catherine reminds me of Beckett from Castle keep the books coming! If you didn't see the trailer it was great .. loved the idea of a book trailer
Grand Murder was a fun read with interesting and well presented characters. The book blurb calls the protagonist Catherine O'Brien as pithy. So well put. Told in first person, from Catherine's point of view, author Stacy Verdict Case takes no time in getting the protagonist's personality front an center. There is plenty of action along with good police procedural stuff, and enough twists to keep you guessing.
Two homicide detectives are sent out on a priority killing. Catherine O'Brien and partner, Louise have two days to solve the crime or make their Chief unhappy.
This was a fast-moving, humorous, and interesting murder mystery. It is hard to find humor with the subject of death, but in this case it was handled by descriptions of various interviews with possible suspects and witnesses.
I expect this series will continue to be even sharper with time.
