This white-knuckled tale is about Idaho game warden Charley Cove struggling to stop a bloody string of deer shot and left in the snow. He’s stymied by a lackadaisical prosecutor and a questionable deputy –plus the tug of two cultures running through his veins that seem to be pulling him in different directions. Cove uncovers evidence that ties the shooter to crimes against people, and unknown to the warden, his bad guy is about to come unglued and drag his bloodbath into a nightmare for a two-legged victim.

Drawing on his experience as an Idaho Fish and Game officer, Tony Latham has created a believable character in Charlie Cove. His writing flows smoothly with scenes that keep the reader interested and curious about the outcome. Officer Cove combines wisdom and intellect with a relentless pursuit of truth. His methods are slow and aggravating to members of the legal field. Their lack of interest in fish and game violators is handled very well and very realistically. With well described investigative techniques, Charlie Cove is able to solve the unsolvable. Terrain features, clues, insight into the criminal mind, and interaction with other agencies included in the story put the reader in the passenger seat next to Charlie Cove. The conclusion provides additional insight into Charlie Cove. He becomes a very real person. It becomes a fascinating 'ride along'! Mr. Latham has one other fictional story, two non-fiction, and an additional non-fiction in the works.

Five Fingers edition by Tony H Latham Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Tony did a great job of capturing the reader and describing the Pashimeroi. The story grabs you and moves through to the climax steadily and vividly. I was hooked and read this book in two sittings. Having worked narcotics and resource crimes, Tony does great job of explaining some of the forensics as well as allowing his experience bleed through.
Obviously, Tony is qualified to write a thriller regarding mystery in the great wilderness of Central Idaho. He has been there! This thriller has all the earmarks of experience and exposure to wildlife. His emphasis on the importance of the animal kingdom cannot be over emphasized, either.

Beyond deer, elk, moose, wolves, however this read contains all the mystique found in any human murder-encounters. From page one all the way through to the last page of capture and trial of the suspect, lies the evil of drugs and the abuse of our natural world.
I absolutely loved this book and it's descriptions of the mountains and the Idaho country. I love animals and enjoyed Annie, the Lab, and the sadness if killing the deer, which are such lovely and docile creatures.
Charley and Julie are meant for each other and I am glad they will have a future.
I sincerely hope there will be many sequels to this book and adventures and cases for Charley Cove and Julie to investigate and solve.
Melind
I thoroughly enjoyed this work of fiction. The author melded his real experiences into the book's hero, Charley Cove. While the story was rather linear, I enjoyed the concept of good vs evil via game warden vs druggie poacher. I will cross my fingers and hope for a sequel. Until then, check out Latham's nonfictional book, Trafficking, to read about some of his real life experiences as a game warden.
Five Fingers gets five stars from me. If you like the rural law enforcement mystery genre, try a Tony Latham book. This is my second and I just pulled the trigger on two more. Realistic Idaho, real Cop life, real CSI expectations, and standard find 'em anywhere tweaker scumbag. Oh yeah, sexual tension, too.
You'll want to be right there with Charlie Cove, the game warden hero of this first fiction by Tony Latham, who knows of what he writes. I admire the pacing of this book, which matches the thoughts of the protagonist and antagonist in their respective passages, and becomes quicker and quicker toward the climactic confrontation. Which is a good thing because I couldn't wait to see how it was going to turn out. If there were a couple of wishes, one would be to have more development of the place. This is a beautiful, wild section of the country, and I'd like to gain a better mental picture. It could be as much of a character as the humans in the story. And another would be to see more of the internal conflict Charlie Cove has because of his own dual nature. And I was glad to see Tony did that in his second Charlie Cove novel, Seven Dead Fish.
Magnetic, captivating and totally believable. Tony connects the complicated matrix of an officer's dedication to the job, the troubled motivation of an addicted criminal, familiar challenges in your personal home life, bureaucratic hurdles, accurate depiction of the full range of connected support personel, relationship to the clients who interact with the officer, insights to human behaviour and all consuming aspect of a significant wildlife case in a manner that draws the reader into the case as an active participant as only a successful career warden with unique story telling abilities can! Great book, a real treat for outdoors enthusiasts! The descriptions relying on all your senses truly bring the case to life like an actual journey into an amazing wilderness many would love to experience. Nobody can tell a game warden war story like an actual officer! Thanks so much for bringing this job to life by inviting the reader along for the patrol .Can't wait for your next book!
